The 14th August saw the return of one of the largest one-day agricultural shows in the country at the Turnpike Showground between Shaftesbury and Gillingham. The Gillingham and Shaftesbury show is one of North Dorsets best events and brings together the rural community for a day of food, fun and farming. This year the August weather provided a mixed bag of wet and dry which did little to dent the numbers attending the show. For the first time in years the show had sold out of tradestands and a local polo club provided one of the spectacles of the day in the main ring. As well as the usual trade stands selling clothing tinted green, the show offers the chance to get up close and personal with a variety of cattle and sheep. Ever wondered what your sausages looked like before they found their way to the butcher then come along to the show to see some of Dorset's finest Pigs. Useful Info: Parking is free at the show and you normally end up only a hundred or so yards from the entrance. Tickets are priced at £3 for children and adults at £16. Children under 5 go free. The main ring is always busy with action-packed displays of rural life, from horses to combined harvesters, there is always something to keep you interested.
